Habitat for Humanity Hosts Rural Community Rally

Habitat for Humanity has marked a significant milestone in Sheridan County, with plans to construct 122 affordable homes by next year. This initiative is spearheaded by Habitat of the Eastern Bighorns, which celebrated its 30th anniversary during the inaugural Rural Community Rally.

Overview of the Rural Community Rally

The Rural Rally, held on October 29, brought together community leaders and residents to honor the legacy of former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn. Their commitment to affordable housing has inspired many across the nation.

Event Highlights

  • Free breakfast for attendees
  • Keynote speaker addressing the importance of community housing
  • Panel discussion featuring current and future Habitat homeowners

Christine Dieterich, the Executive Director of Habitat of the Eastern Bighorns, emphasized the project’s scale and its community impact. So far, in Weston Village, three homes are occupied, while ten others are under contract.

Construction Plans and Achievements

Construction began last year, with a goal to complete all homes by December 2026. Dieterich noted that this project represents the largest and fastest development the organization has undertaken, typically constructing only three to four homes annually.

This community effort demonstrates what can be achieved through collaboration and dedication, according to Dieterich.

The Legacy of Habitat’s Impact

The event highlighted not only the Carters’ legacy but also Habitat of the Eastern Bighorns’ 30-year history of transforming lives.

  • The Bell Family was the first to receive a Habitat home in Sheridan.
  • Robert Bell shared their journey towards owning an affordable home.
  • Habitat has constructed homes for various community members, including teachers, veterans, and nurses.

Joshua Smith, a local builder, moderated a panel discussion featuring homeowners like Dakota Trevino-Bublitz, Brenda Keahey, and Lauren Alden. Each panelist shared personal stories about how Habitat for Humanity has positively impacted their lives.

Community Engagement

The panel also focused on the importance of giving back and engaging with the Habitat community. The event culminated in a tour of several homes in the Weston Village development, showcasing the progress made in affordable housing.

Through dedicated efforts, Habitat for Humanity continues to foster hope and stability in Sheridan County, demonstrating the power of community collaboration in creating lasting change.
