Liberty Hotel Boston Apologizes, Settles Women’s Bathroom Discrimination Complaint
The Liberty Hotel in Boston has publicly apologized and resolved a discrimination complaint involving two women, Liz Victor and Ansley Baker. The incident dates back to May, when a security guard reportedly entered the women’s bathroom, raised alarm, and accused Baker of being a man. This event drew significant attention and led to an investigation by the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (MCAD).
Incident Overview
On the day of the incident, the couple claimed that the security guard shouted, “No men are allowed,” while demanding identification to verify their gender. The women stated they were having a heated exchange with the guard before being asked to leave the hotel premises. Following the outcry, the Liberty Hotel issued a statement justifying the guard’s actions, indicating that several women reported concerns about two adults sharing a bathroom stall.
Hotel’s Response and Settlement Details
In the aftermath, the security guard was suspended and is no longer employed at the hotel. However, Victor and Baker expressed dissatisfaction with the hotel’s initial statement, feeling it implied they had been in the same stall, which they vehemently denied. In June, the MCAD launched an investigation, resulting in a settlement announcement.
- The Liberty Hotel will donate $10,000 to a LGBTQIA2S+ nonprofit organization.
- The hotel will enhance its anti-discrimination training and policies.
MCAD Chairwoman Sunila Thomas George condemned the treatment the couple faced, stating it was degrading and unjust under Massachusetts civil rights law.
Liberty Hotel’s General Manager Mark Fisher apologized on behalf of the establishment. “We deeply regret that our initial statement may have created unintended impressions,” he noted. He emphasized the hotel’s commitment to learning from this incident to prevent future occurrences.
Future Legal Actions
Despite the settlement, Victor and Baker plan to pursue a separate lawsuit against the Liberty Hotel. They want to hold the establishment accountable for its previous statements and ensure that larger changes are made. Baker commented on the importance of this issue, saying, “It means that much to a lot of other people out there.” Their attorney is expected to file the lawsuit shortly.
