Falcons Release Kicker After Missed Extra Point Against Patriots
The Atlanta Falcons faced a narrow defeat to the New England Patriots, losing 24-23 in a tightly contested match. This game marked a significant moment when kicker Parker Romo missed a crucial extra point attempt after a touchdown pass from Michael Penix Jr. to Drake London. With just under five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, this touchdown could have tied the game at 24-24.
Despite the Patriots going three-and-out on their next drive, the Falcons couldn’t capitalize on their final possession. This missed opportunity resulted in a heartbreaking loss for Atlanta.
Falcons Release Kicker After Missed Extra Point
In response to Romo’s performance, the Falcons announced on Tuesday that they had waived him from the team. Remarkably, this missed kick was the only extra point miss for Romo in his seven games this season. He successfully converted 11 out of 14 field goal attempts.
As a replacement, the Falcons are bringing in Zane Gonzalez. The NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported this development. Gonzalez had missed the entire 2022 and 2023 seasons before joining the Washington Commanders last year, where he played six games. During his time with Washington, he converted five of seven field goal attempts and successfully made all 19 extra point attempts.
Upcoming Matchup
Atlanta’s new kicker, Zane Gonzalez, is expected to play against the Indianapolis Colts, who currently hold a 7-2 record. The game presents a new opportunity for Gonzalez as he aims to solidify his place on the team.
