Anduril Launches Australian Factory for Unmanned Submarine Production

Anduril Industries has inaugurated a new production facility in Sydney to manufacture its “Ghost Shark” unmanned submarine. This factory is dedicated to producing these advanced vessels for the Royal Australian Navy. Ghost Shark is based on the Dive-XL platform and is categorized as an extra-large autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV).

Overview of the Ghost Shark

The Ghost Shark submarine has been specifically designed to be cost-effective and stealthy, with the capability to conduct intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions. Additionally, it is engineered for strike missions, expanding its operational versatility.

  • Type: Extra-large autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV)
  • Design: Modular architecture that allows adaptability for various missions
  • Dimensions: Fits in a standard 40-foot container

Contract and Production Details

In September, the Royal Australian Navy awarded Anduril a significant contract worth US$1.1 billion for the large-scale production of Ghost Shark submarines. At the time of the contract award, Anduril had already delivered three prototypes and was preparing the first production model.

Factory Specifications

The new factory spans 80,000 square feet and is built explicitly for the production of Ghost Shark submarines. While specific details regarding production rates and unit costs remain undisclosed, the facility aims to leverage advanced production techniques for efficient manufacturing.

Statements from Officials

During the factory launch ceremony, Australian Defense Minister Pat Conroy emphasized the strategic significance of the Ghost Shark. He stated that the submarine would enhance Australia’s capabilities in underwater warfare. Conroy remarked, “Its modular architecture and advanced production techniques mean it can be rapidly adapted to meet operational needs.”

Anduril Industries is recognized as a diversified defense technology company, specializing in various unmanned systems, including anti-drone systems, missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles. This new facility marks a crucial step in advancing Australia’s maritime deterrence capabilities.
