Impending Eruption Looms at Kīlauea Volcano

Reports from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory indicate that an eruption at Kīlauea Volcano is imminent. Currently, two active vents, known as the north and south vents, are showing significant activity. This comes as the ongoing eruption, which began on December 23, 2024, continues to display episodic lava fountaining.

Current Eruption Activity at Kīlauea

As of November 4, 2025, the north and south vents are experiencing increased volcanic activity, including:

  • Strong glow and minor spattering observed overnight.
  • A total of 14 lava overflows at the south vent.
  • 10 lava overflows at the north vent.

These overflow events have been significant, with lava reaching the base of the vents. However, there has not been any accompanying lava fountaining during these overflows.

Prediction of Eruption Window

Forecasting models suggest that the most likely period for a new eruption window will occur between November 5 to 7, though it could occur at any time from November 4 to 8. The ongoing activity indicates that the start of Episode 36 is nearing.

Historical Context of the Current Eruption

The ongoing eruption at Kīlauea has been marked by episodic lava fountaining, a phenomenon reminiscent of the 1983–86 eruption associated with Puʻuʻōʻō. Since the eruption’s inception, lava fountains have erupted approximately weekly. The previous episode, Episode 35, concluded on October 18, 2025, after a sustained period of lava fountaining lasting seven and a half hours.

Monitoring Volcano Behavior

Kīlauea’s summit inflation has continued, which typically signifies the movement of magma below the surface. The combination of continued lava overflow and strong incandescence at the vents heightens anticipation for the next eruptive episode.

As always, local authorities and the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory are closely monitoring the situation, ensuring that residents and visitors remain informed and safe.
