Demolition Begins for Historic Kellingley Social Club

Demolition has commenced at the Kellingley Social Club, paving the way for a new community facility. The former social club, located in Knottingley, is set to be replaced by a modern sports pavilion.

Plans for the New Community and Sports Facility

Wakefield Council approved the demolition plans in July of last year. This new facility will feature:

  • A bar
  • A function room
  • Changing rooms
  • Spectator amenities

The total cost for this project is estimated at £6.3 million. This initiative aligns with the Knottingley and Ferrybridge masterplan, which aims to rejuvenate the area over the next 15 to 20 years.

Progress and Community Sentiment

Jack Hemingway, the council’s cabinet member for regeneration and economic growth, expressed the community’s eagerness for the demolition. He noted that residents have anticipated this change, marking it as a significant step towards progress.

“We’re investing over £6 million to transform the site into a purpose-built facility that the community can enjoy,” Hemingway stated.

Security and Timeline for Demolition

This demolition process included necessary safety measures, such as the removal of internal fixtures and hazardous materials. Early this year, the site faced vandalism, prompting the council to enhance security. Now, round-the-clock security is in effect, and the public has been advised to avoid the area during the demolition.

Phase Description Timeline

Funding for the demolition and development has been secured from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. The official timeline indicates that the second demolition phase will start by early 2024, with project completion anticipated by early 2026.
