Flooding Alert: Cork City Low-Lying Areas Face Significant Risk

Cork City Council has issued a warning about the significant risk of flooding in low-lying areas of the city this week. From November 5 to November 8, particularly high astronomical spring tides are expected. Alongside these tides, a tidal surge is forecast, which may result in elevated tide levels.

Flooding Forecast Details

The natural high tides for the upcoming days are predicted at the following times:

  • Wednesday: 4:38 AM and 5:02 PM
  • Thursday: 5:23 AM and 5:47 PM
  • Friday: 6:09 AM and 6:34 PM
  • Saturday: 6:56 AM and 7:20 PM

Authorities indicate that road ponding or flooding is most likely during the high tide on Wednesday evening, as well as during the high tides on Thursday and Friday. The following locations are particularly vulnerable:

  • Morrison’s Quay
  • Fr. Mathew Quay
  • Fr. Mathew Street
  • Union Quay
  • Trinity Bridge
  • South Terrace
  • Rutland Street
  • Sawmill Street
  • Crosses Green
  • Sharman Crawford Street
  • Wandesford Quay

Precautionary Measures

Although widespread flooding in the city center is not currently expected, the situation remains under close observation. Cork City Council encourages residents and businesses to take preventive steps to safeguard their properties. This includes:

  • Erecting tidal barriers before the anticipated high tides on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings.
  • Ensuring these barriers remain in place overnight for additional protection.

Should conditions change, further updates will be provided. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and prepared during this period of heightened flood risk.
