Heavy Rain Triggers Widespread Flooding and Disruption Across Wales
A significant weather event has struck Wales, leading to extensive flooding and disruption across the region. Heavy rainfall has prompted flood warnings in areas such as Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, and Swansea.
Impact of Heavy Rain in Wales
On Tuesday around 15:30 GMT, customers at The Gatehouse pub in Cwmbwrla, Swansea, were forced to evacuate due to rapidly rising water levels. Landlady Vicky Sheffield expressed her alarm, noting that this incident marked a repeat occurrence within just six weeks. She stated, “It’s quite scary.”
Flood Warnings and Preparedness
The Met Office issued a yellow warning for heavy rain across much of south Wales, valid until 08:00 on Wednesday. By 06:05 GMT on Wednesday, Natural Resources Wales reported:
- 16 flood warnings in effect
- 41 flood alerts across the region
In Cwmbwrla, problems initially began in September due to a collapsed culvert. Local authorities confirmed that the situation was worsened by a blocked sewer linked to the recently demolished Cwmfelin social club. In response, Swansea council deployed pumping equipment, although it was quickly overwhelmed. They stated, “We are doing everything we can to reopen the road as soon as possible.”
Transportation Disruptions
Flood waters also led to significant disruptions in public transportation. Rail services between Whitland and Carmarthen, as well as on the line at Pontarddulais, were suspended. Trainline warned that heavy flooding on the railway would likely result in cancellations or alterations to services until at least 13:00.
Community Response and Challenges
Publican Jon Davison from the Cresselly Arms in Pontargothi shared the impact of the flooding on his establishment. He reported significant damage with water levels reaching waist height and debris causing broken windows. He remarked, “It’s shocking, what can you say? It’s terrible.” The repeated flooding has led to accumulated logs in the rivers, incurring high removal costs for the local council.
Pembrokeshire council also alerted motorists about widespread surface water flooding, resulting in numerous road closures on Tuesday evening. The Mid and West Wales Fire Service had to carry out several rescues of drivers stranded on flooded roads.
Future Risks of Flooding
While heavy rainfall is expected to ease, authorities warned that higher than normal tides could result in coastal flooding until Thursday. Communities near the River Towy in Carmarthenshire and low-lying areas in Ammanford, Llandybie, and Aberlash are at increased risk of flooding.
