PPA Unveils Plans for Revitalizing Greyhound Bus Station

The Philadelphia Parking Authority (PPA) has taken a significant step in revitalizing the former Greyhound Bus Terminal. The board approved a lease agreement with the property owner to renovate and operate the facility as an intercity bus depot. This decision aims to address an ongoing challenge of providing a suitable location for long-distance bus services ahead of major upcoming events.

Plans for Revitalizing the Greyhound Bus Station

Last Monday, PPA board members reached a vital consensus regarding the future of the bus terminal located on Filbert Street. This action will enable Greyhound, Peter Pan, and other interstate bus services to operate from a dedicated station. The decision comes in the context of Philadelphia preparing for the nation’s 250th birthday celebrations and the FIFA World Cup in 2026.

Site Details and Lease Agreement

The Filbert Street terminal comprises approximately 13,700 square feet, featuring 14 bus slips for arrivals and departures. The monthly rent is set at $100,000, with the total lease amounting to $13 million over its duration. The 10-year lease allows for annual renewals unless canceled by either party with a 180-day notice.

Renovation and Operational Plans

The estimated cost for the necessary renovations is around $1.5 million. This budget covers interior remodeling, facade improvements, and landscaping efforts. Additionally, the PPA will manage operations at the terminal, including assessing fees on bus carriers utilizing the facility and local street loading zones.

Funding and Legislative Approval

  • Renovation costs: $1.5 million
  • Rent: $100,000/month, totaling $13 million over the lease
  • Facility size: 13,700 square feet
  • Bus slips: 14

Funding for the renovations and operational costs will rely on the passage of legislation from City Council. This legislation aims to establish usage fees for bus lines, although initial skepticism has been noted among some council members.

Background on Greyhound Operations

Greyhound vacated its previous terminal at 10th and Filbert Streets in June 2023 due to corporate restructuring and the proposed development of a new arena for the Philadelphia 76ers. Following this move, city officials temporarily relocated bus services to Market Street, which lacked necessary amenities, causing disruption and congestion. Subsequently, operations moved to Spring Garden Street, resulting in ongoing challenges for passengers and nearby businesses.

PPA’s Vision for Improved Services

The PPA is committed to enhancing the quality of life in the area by efficiently managing the new bus station. This aligns with their broader objectives, including addressing sidewalk parking violations and ensuring compliance with accessibility guidelines.

Brown-Sow expressed optimism about the staff’s ability to transform the bus station into a secure and welcoming environment for travelers. The PPA aims to restore dignity to the experience of intercity bus travel in Philadelphia.
