Munster GAA Reschedules Cork and Kerry Seeding for Provincial Senior Football Championship

The Munster GAA has announced a postponement in the plans to seed Cork and Kerry for the 2026 Munster Senior Football Championship (SFC). Initially, there were expectations for a format change, the first since 2015. However, these changes will now be deferred until the 2027 season.

Details of the Decision

At a meeting in late July, the provincial council decided that, for a three-year period, the top two teams from the Allianz Football League would compete in opposite semi-finals. Kerry, who emerged as the Division 1 champions, and Cork, who placed fifth in Division 2, were both set to be kept apart in the upcoming draw.

Draw Schedule and Format

The Munster SFC draw will take place on Thursday, November 27, but the format will remain unchanged from previous years. The finalists from the previous season will receive byes into the semi-finals.

  • Kerry and Clare are to be seeded based on last year’s performance.
  • Cork’s team, led by manager John Cleary, will join Limerick, Waterford, and Tipperary in the quarter-final draw.

Cork’s Historical Performance

Cork has not won the provincial title since 2012 and has not appeared in the Munster final since 2021. This lack of recent success highlights the challenges ahead for the team as they prepare for the upcoming championship season.

With many counties in the Munster region opposing the planned format changes, the current structure will remain in place, ensuring consistency as teams gear up for the next year’s competition.
