Panama City church expands food pantry hours to assist community during government shutdown

In response to the ongoing government shutdown, First Baptist Church of Panama City has expanded its food pantry hours. The church will now open its pantry every Monday to assist local families in need.

Expanded Food Pantry Hours in Panama City

Rick McClung, the executive pastor, announced the changes. Normally, the pantry operates on the second and fourth Mondays of each month. However, it will remain open weekly until the shutdown concludes.

Support for the Community

The church’s pantry served over 300 households on its first day of expanded hours. In total, more than 1,700 meals were distributed on November 3. Notably, there are no eligibility requirements to receive assistance; anyone in need can simply arrive at the church.

Food Sourcing and Donations

The pantry collaborates with Feeding the Gulf Coast, a nonprofit that provides food to local pantries. The church has a partnership with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), enabling it to receive matched food orders from the nonprofit.

In order to support the pantry’s mission, church officials encourage monetary donations rather than food items. Funds can be directed to the food pantry through the church’s website, making it easier to purchase additional supplies from Feeding the Gulf Coast.

Community Commitment

McClung emphasized the church’s commitment to serve the local community, stating, “We just feel that’s part of the will of God for our church.” He noted that families can visit the pantry weekly without restrictions, making it accessible to anyone in need.

This initiative highlights the critical role that community organizations play during challenging times, particularly amid the uncertainty of government support programs like Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.
