69 News Reporter Engages Voters as They Cast Ballots
Voter engagement is crucial on Election Day, and this year, officials in Pennsylvania and New Jersey are keeping an eye on turnout numbers. Early in the day, 69 News Reporter Sydney Kay monitored the voting activity in both states.
Early Voter Turnout
Throughout Tuesday morning, polls witnessed a steady stream of voters. Key locations included Phillipsburg, New Jersey, and Easton and Forks Township in Northampton County, Pennsylvania.
High Turnout at Polling Places
- Forks Elementary School: Experienced significant turnout, with lines lasting throughout the day.
- Pilgrim Presbyterian Church: Opened at 6 a.m. and attracted voters eager to participate.
Rebekah Pite from Easton emphasized the importance of voting: “Our democracy really depends upon it,” she stated after casting her ballot. Gabriel Mercado was among the early risers in Phillipsburg, indicating that his commitment to voting motivated him to come out first thing in the morning.
The Importance of Voting
Voters acknowledged the significance of their participation in one of the two gubernatorial races happening nationwide. The focus on New Jersey’s elections encouraged many to make their voices heard. Mercado noted, “If you want your voice heard, this is how to do it.”
Anthony Pizzino also expressed the need for active participation, saying, “You’re a taxpayer, you want to find out what’s going on in town and voice your opinion.”
Polling Experience
At the College Hill Presbyterian Church polling place in Easton, the process was efficient. Conversely, Forks Elementary in Forks Township had long lines, indicating robust turnout. Voter Bruce Brewer shared his experience, stating he waited about thirty minutes but viewed it positively, saying it showed serious electoral engagement.
“Years ago, there might’ve been 200 voters for the entire day; now it’s likely to reach a couple thousand,” Brewer observed, highlighting the increase in voter participation.
Polling Hours
Polls in New Jersey and Pennsylvania remained open until 8 p.m. on Tuesday. Voters in line at that time were assured the opportunity to cast their ballots.
