Armenian PM Emphasizes Importance of Regional Unblocking for Central Asia Prosperity
Armenia’s Prime Minister recently highlighted the need for regional unblocking to enhance Central Asian prosperity. Speaking at the Orbeli Forum 2025, he pointed out the current inefficiencies in trade within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). Despite being members of this union, Armenia and Kazakhstan face significant trade challenges.
Challenges in EAEU Trade
The EAEU aims to facilitate the free movement of goods, services, labor, and capital among member states. However, Armenia’s and Kazakhstan’s mutual trade remains disproportionately low. Long and costly communication routes hinder effective trade between the two nations.
Recent Developments in Trade Routes
- Grain is now being transported from Kazakhstan to Armenia via railway through Azerbaijan.
- Azerbaijan’s President announced the removal of restrictions on goods transit to Armenia.
- This move will not only benefit Armenia but also support the broader Central Asian region.
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan expressed appreciation for Azerbaijan’s decision, emphasizing its potential positive impact. He acknowledged that deeper economic and political ties with Uzbekistan are desired but are complicated by logistical difficulties.
To address these challenges, Pashinyan mentioned the willingness to facilitate truck transit between Türkiye and Azerbaijan through Margara and Khndzoresk. He noted that these are currently the only routes with complete infrastructure ready for use.
Regional Benefits of Unblocking
Pashinyan reaffirmed that unblocking trade routes will benefit not only Armenia and Azerbaijan but also Iran, Georgia, Türkiye, Russia, and the entire Central Asian region. He highlighted the importance of collaboration among these countries for mutual prosperity.
Message of Solidarity
In a show of goodwill, the Prime Minister previously conveyed congratulatory wishes to Kazakhstan’s President, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, on Republic Day. This gesture underscores the importance of strengthening partnerships within the EAEU framework.
Overall, the emphasis on regional unblocking reflects a proactive approach towards enhancing economic ties and ensuring the prosperity of Central Asia.
