Impact of Weather on Opening Dates

Warm weather and insufficient snowfall have delayed openings for several resorts. For example, Brian Head Resort planned to start its season this weekend but postponed it due to poor conditions. The resort is actively working on snowmaking when temperatures allow.

October brought significant moisture, making Salt Lake City record its wettest October. However, warm conditions have hindered snowmaking efforts necessary for timely openings.

Notable Improvements at Ski Resorts

This winter, several resorts will showcase major enhancements, reflecting almost $600 million in capital investments planned through 2026. Some highlights include:

  • Deer Valley Resort: Seven new lifts have been added to double skiable terrain.
  • Powder Mountain: Introduction of a “skiable museum” feature.
  • Alta Ski Area: Added four new Wyssen towers to aid in avalanche mitigation.
  • Park City Mountain: A new 10-person gondola will streamline movement to Red Pine Lodge.
  • Snowbasin: A high-speed detachable quad lift replaces the Becker Lift for faster rides.
  • Sundance: Opening of The Inn at Sundance Mountain Resort, offering 63 rooms and art gallery.

Anticipating a Thriving Ski Season

The 2022-2023 ski season generated 6.5 million skier days and $2.51 billion in visitor spending, indicating a robust demand for skiing in Utah.

The Utah Transit Authority will continue to operate ski bus services to popular destinations, starting November 23, pending weather conditions.

As ski resorts prepare for a competitive season, skiers and snowboarders look forward to hitting the slopes despite the current weather challenges.
