UVU currently employs 23 police officers to serve its large community of approximately 46,000 students and staff. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, public institutions typically require about 2.2 officers for every 1,000 students. By this standard, UVU should have roughly 100 officers, highlighting a significant gap in their security personnel.

University officials have expressed their intention to hire eight additional officers. However, this number is still deemed insufficient by experts in campus security. Reactions from students regarding the potential increase in police presence have been mixed. Freshman Jacob Birrell acknowledged that more police could enhance feelings of safety. However, he also noted that an increased police presence might create an atmosphere that resembles a prison rather than a welcoming campus environment.
Junior Daneshka Perry, who attended the rally where Kirk was shot, shared similar sentiments. She recognized the need for safety measures but worried that heightened security could invoke fear among students. Perry appreciated the availability of counseling and therapy following the incident, which had a profound impact on her.
