Utah University Expands Police Force Following Charlie Kirk’s Tragic Death

In response to the tragic death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, Utah Valley University (UVU) is expanding its police force. The move comes after significant criticism regarding security measures during the event where Kirk was shot.

Details of the Tragedy

Charlie Kirk was fatally shot on September 10 while speaking at UVU in an outdoor courtyard. The shooting occurred from a rooftop, creating serious concerns about security protocols at the university.

New Security Measures Implemented

Following the incident, UVU plans to hire eight additional campus police officers and two safety managers to enhance security. Spokesperson Ellen Treanor confirmed this development as part of the university’s commitment to ensuring safer environments for future events.

Criticisms of Current Security Practices

  • The Orem campus lacked standard safety measures during the event attended by approximately 3,000 people.
  • There were no bag checks or metal detectors in use.
  • Security staffing was significantly below national recommendations, with only six officers present at the event.
  • The university’s police force, comprised of 23 officers, serves a student body of about 32,000, creating a ratio of one officer for every 1,400 students.

Staffing Concerns and Recommendations

According to a 2024 Department of Justice study, a recommended security ratio is one officer for every 500 students. To align with this standard, UVU would need at least 64 officers on staff.

The university’s policing budget for the fiscal year, starting October 1, is set at $2.1 million, slightly down from the previous year. This raises questions regarding the funding sources for the planned additions to their police force.

Ongoing Legal Proceedings

Tyler Robinson, the individual charged with aggravated murder in relation to Kirk’s death, is currently awaiting trial.

As Utah Valley University works to enhance its security framework, the tragic shooting underscores the ongoing need for improved safety measures in academic environments.
