Lobo Men’s Basketball Team Kicks Off Home Opener
The New Mexico men’s basketball team heralded the start of their 2025-26 season at The Pit, facing East Texas A&M on Wednesday night. Fans were treated to an opportunity to photograph the 2024-25 Mountain West Regular Season Trophy before the game.
Lobos Set for a Unique Season
This season presents a unique challenge for the Lobos. They are among the few teams in the country without returning players, coaches, or staff from last year. This is a fresh start for the program under head coach Eric Olen, who previously developed the UC San Diego basketball program over two decades.
Preseason Expectations
The Lobos were predicted to finish fifth in the Mountain West preseason poll. Despite the low expectations, the team’s storied history offers some optimism for fans.
- New Mexico holds a record of 92-30 in season openers.
- They have achieved 22 consecutive wins in openers since a loss against Cal in 2002-03.
- At The Pit, they boast an impressive 53-5 record in home openers.
The last home opener loss occurred that same 2002-03 season against Cal. As they prepare for their inaugural game, the Lobos aim to extend their impressive streak.
Upcoming Games
The Lobos will continue their three-game homestand this Saturday, hosting UT Arlington at 2 p.m. Fans eagerly await to see how the new roster will perform in the coming matchups.
