Stellantis Recalls 320,000 Jeeps Over Battery Fire Risk, Advises Outdoor Parking

Stellantis has issued a significant recall affecting over 320,000 Jeep vehicles due to a fire risk associated with their battery systems. The recall, announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), covers specific models of hybrid Jeeps, including the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee.

Recall Details

The recall pertains to the following vehicle models:

  • 2020-2025 Jeep Wrangler plug-in hybrids (PHEVs): 228,221 units affected
  • 2022-2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrids: 91,844 units affected

Stellantis recommends that owners park their vehicles outdoors and refrain from charging them until a solution is provided. The company has yet to announce a remedy for the battery issue, which poses a heightened fire risk. According to the NHTSA, the battery pack may contain damaged separator cells, increasing the possibility of spontaneous combustion.

Prior Incidents and Responses

This is not Stellantis’ first recall involving hybrid Jeeps. In September 2024, over 150,000 hybrid Jeeps were recalled due to a similar issue. At that time, the remedy involved a software update that typically did not require any hardware changes. However, since that recall, nine additional fire incidents have been reported, raising concerns about the effectiveness of the previous solution.

The NHTSA has also indicated that Stellantis is aware of one injury related to these incidents, although details remain sparse.

Recommended Actions for Jeep Owners

Owners of potentially affected hybrids can check the recall status of their vehicles starting November 6th through NHTSA’s VIN search tool. The official NHTSA recall identification number for this incident is 25V-741. Stellantis has stated that a new remedy is expected soon, urging customers to wait for notifications regarding service appointments.

A Stellantis spokesperson commented on the evolving understanding of the battery issue. They emphasized that the previous recommendation was based on the best data available at that time.

As this situation develops, it is crucial for Jeep owners to remain vigilant and stay informed through official channels.
