AIB Stands Firm on Hybrid-Working Plan Starting January Despite Employee Pushback
AIB is proceeding with its hybrid-working plan, despite strong pushback from employees. Starting January, employees will be required to work from an office for a minimum of three days a week. This decision came even after the bank’s significant union, the Financial Services Union (FSU), announced that its members overwhelmingly rejected the proposed changes.
Union Response and Conciliation Efforts
The FSU made the decision to refer the matter to the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) for further conciliation. This move follows a similar situation involving Bank of Ireland, which also faced disagreements regarding hybrid-working practices earlier in August. In that case, the FSU permitted its members to comply with the bank’s policy of in-person workplace attendance for at least eight days a month while awaiting mediation.
Commitment to Hybrid-Working Arrangements
AIB remains committed to its hybrid-working framework, which is set to begin on January 1st. A representative from AIB stated that the company will continue to engage with employees and the FSU to refine the arrangements. “The union balloted its members on these principles and informed us that the ballot has not passed,” the spokesperson noted.
Concerns from Employees
FSU General Secretary John O’Connell emphasized ongoing concerns among union members since the announcement of AIB’s hybrid working proposals in July. Despite the bank’s plans, O’Connell pointed out the need for a revamped approach to address these concerns effectively. “We want to find a solution that works for both staff and the employer,” he said.
Current Hybrid-Working Model
AIB initiated a hybrid-working model in early 2022, which varies the number of office days based on job roles. As of now, the expectation is that employees will be in the office for at least two days per week. However, roles such as branch staff may require daily attendance.
Workforce Statistics
- Total Employees: Nearly 10,400 as of June
- Office Attendance Requirement (Starting January): Minimum of three days a week
- Current Office Attendance Requirement: At least two days a week, with some roles requiring full attendance
AIB’s management is optimistic about the ongoing dialogue with the FSU, aiming to reach an agreement that satisfies both employee concerns and business needs. The conversation continues as the company moves forward with its hybrid-working plans.
