Monterey County to Receive Partial SNAP Funding Next Week
Monterey County is set to receive partial CalFresh benefits next week. This follows federal approval of limited SNAP funding amid the ongoing government shutdown. County officials aim to issue these partial benefits during the week of November 10.
Importance of Continued Participation
Residents are urged to submit all necessary paperwork to avoid delays when full benefits resume. Annette Gallegos from the Department of Social Services emphasized the importance of maintaining ongoing participation. “It will take at least a week, but it could take longer so we have to wait for an update,” she stated during the weekly county briefing.
CalFresh Beneficiaries in Monterey County
Over 50,000 residents in Monterey County rely on CalFresh. Among them, approximately 29,000 are children. Many beneficiaries are working individuals who require food assistance due to job-related issues, such as reduced hours or seasonal layoffs in both the agricultural and hospitality sectors.
Encouragement for Applications
The Monterey County Department of Social Services has noted a recent decline in application rates, although requests usually rise from November to January. Gallegos urged the community to apply for CalFresh benefits. “Our department has seen a decline in CalFresh applications this year,” she explained. “We want to encourage people to apply for those benefits that they are entitled to.”
Support for Local Food Banks
In addition to the CalFresh benefits, the county has dedicated $150,000 in one-time funding to help local food banks this month. County officials are also encouraging cities and partner agencies to contribute additional funds.
