Mattingly Departs Jays; Schneider Set to Return in 2026

Toronto Blue Jays are seeing significant changes within their coaching staff. Don Mattingly has stepped down from his position as bench coach, while manager John Schneider is set to continue leading the team through the 2026 season.

Mattingly’s Departure

Don Mattingly joined the Blue Jays after the 2022 season, initially serving as the bench coach under Schneider. During the 2024 season, he became the offensive coordinator before returning to the bench coach role.

Mattingly’s decision to leave follows the Blue Jays’ close run in the World Series, where they fell just one victory short of clinching the title. General manager Ross Atkins stated that Mattingly chose to step down to spend more time with his family. He emphasized Mattingly’s lasting impact on the team.

Schneider’s Contract Extension

In contrast, the Blue Jays have exercised the contract option of manager John Schneider for the 2026 season. Under Schneider’s leadership, the team improved by 20 wins from the previous year, marking his third full season as manager.

Atkins praised Schneider’s remarkable leadership, hinting at the possibility of extending his contract even further. Schneider, who was appointed interim manager in July 2022, has successfully transitioned to a permanent role.

Coaching Staff Outlook

Atkins indicated that the Blue Jays do not plan significant changes to their coaching staff. He mentioned, “We’ll just try to get better,” implying a focus on improving the current setup without major shifts.

Roster Moves and Free Agents

As part of their roster strategy, the Blue Jays have also made a qualifying offer of $22,025,000 to free agent infielder Bo Bichette. The two-time All-Star shortstop is expected to decline this offer.

  • Bo Bichette: Two-time All-Star, expected to reject qualifying offer.
  • Shane Bieber: Right-hander who exercised his $16 million option for 2026.
  • Chris Bassitt and Max Scherzer: Both pitchers are currently free agents.

In the World Series, Scherzer started Game 7, while Bassitt contributed in relief, showcasing their vital roles in the postseason.
