Details of the Incident
The protest occurred during an event featuring two Israeli soldiers as part of the “Combat on Campus” tour, organized by the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) group, Students Supporting Israel (SSI). The SSI reported on social media that protesters “forced their way” into the venue, leading to chaos and injuries.
Videos shared by the group showed broken glass and individuals shouting amidst the confusion. One of the Israeli soldiers was reportedly injured due to shattered glass.
Response from Student Groups and TMU
In defense of the protest, another student group, Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), claimed that their demonstrators faced aggressive actions from one of the soldiers. They alleged that protesters were grabbed, shoved, and chased, leading to physical confrontations.
Toronto police intervened during the chaos, following protesters to a nearby subway station, where several were subdued and arrested.
TMU has expressed its “deep concern” over the events that transpired. They issued a statement condemning any acts of aggression and violence, asserting that such actions do not align with the university’s values. The institution emphasized its compassion for any students who experienced injury during this incident.
