Radio City Rockettes Celebrate 100 Years with Christmas Spectacular
The Radio City Rockettes, an iconic feature of New York City’s holiday celebrations, are commemorating a century of performances this year. Their annual Christmas Spectacular showcases the Rockettes’ exquisite dance routines and serves as a tribute to their storied history in entertainment.
The Legacy of the Rockettes
Founded in 1925 as the “Missouri Rockets” in St. Louis, the group was brought to New York City by S.L. Rothafel, a theater impresario. He renamed them the “Roxyettes” before settling on “Rockettes” in 1932 when they debuted at Radio City Music Hall. Initially a troupe of 16 dancers, the Rockettes have now expanded to a company of over 80 performers.
Christmas Spectacular Highlights
- Signature precision kick line
- Iconic “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers” act
- Diverse dance styles including jazz, tap, and ballet
- Modern elements like digital projections and drones
The Christmas Spectacular, which dates back to 1933, will run through January 5. This performance is expected to draw more than one million viewers this season.
Historical Significance
The Rockettes have a rich history, having notably performed for American troops during World War II. They have also maintained a prominent presence at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and several high-profile television events, including the Super Bowl Halftime Show and NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.”
In the late 1970s, amid the threat of Radio City’s closure, the Rockettes played a crucial role in a campaign to preserve their historic venue. They broke racial barriers in 1987 by welcoming their first Black member, Jennifer Jones.
Artistry and Athleticism
This year’s shows reflect both traditional choreography and contemporary techniques. Each performance lasts 90 minutes and features over 200 kicks. Dancers exhibit remarkable athletic prowess, blending grace with rigorous physical demands.
“We are all exceptional dancers but we are also athletes,” said Taylor Shimko, a dance captain with 16 seasons under her belt. The Rockettes continue to be a source of inspiration for aspiring dancers and a symbol of New York’s vibrant cultural landscape.
As they celebrate 100 years with the Christmas Spectacular, the Radio City Rockettes remain a beloved pillar of holiday tradition, captivating audiences with their extraordinary talent and timeless performances.
