Paul George Nears Final Step for Sixers Season Debut
Coach Nick Nurse of the Philadelphia 76ers has indicated that Paul George is potentially one step away from making his season debut. Following a Friday practice, Nurse revealed that George is scheduled to see doctors this weekend. This visit could mark the final hurdle for George after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery during the offseason.
Paul George’s Anticipated Return
George has been actively practicing since mid-October, participating in full-contact scrimmages. Nurse noted that George is moving exceptionally well. The coach expressed hope that doctors will clear George for play, as he aims to get back into the rhythm of the game soon.
Defensive Impact Expected
- George stands 6 feet 9 inches tall, providing a significant defensive boost to the Sixers.
- The team currently ranks 22nd in the NBA in defensive efficiency.
- George is known for his leadership skills, helping teammates navigate game situations.
Last season, George struggled with injuries, averaging 16.2 points while shooting 43% from the field. He contributed 5.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 1.8 steals across 41 games. However, he lacked the explosiveness that previously defined his career, making him a sought-after scorer and perennial All-Star.
Position Flexibility
George is open to playing power forward this season, a role that could address gaps in the Sixers’ roster. With Dominick Barlow and Jabari Walker on two-way contracts, they have been sharing the minutes at this position.
Injury Updates on Other Players
Barlow is also working toward a return. He is scheduled for a follow-up appointment on Monday after undergoing elbow surgery. Barlow has been sidelined since October 25 but had a promising start to the season before his injury.
Meanwhile, Jared McCain successfully marked his return to the court after a long absence due to knee and thumb surgeries. He played 15 minutes in his first game and, despite being scoreless, contributed two assists and one rebound. McCain remains on a minutes restriction as he adapts to playing with a bulky knee brace.
Upcoming Games
The 76ers will face the Toronto Raptors on Saturday and the Detroit Pistons on Sunday, both at 7:30 p.m. The team has experienced mixed results in back-to-back games thus far. Nurse aims to create a better mindset for the players before such scheduling to avoid letting the back-to-back scenario affect their performance.
