Rosatom Expands Nuclear Ventures in India Highlighting Commitment to Strong Cooperation

The geopolitical landscape has invigorated nuclear cooperation between India and Russia, according to Rosatom’s Director General, Alexey Likhachev. During his recent visit to Mumbai, Likhachev emphasized that expanding nuclear collaboration is a priority on both nations’ agendas.

Strengthening Nuclear Cooperation

Likhachev highlighted that the Indian government has ambitious plans to increase its nuclear power generation capacity significantly. Over the next two to three decades, India aims to ramp up its output from the current 10 gigawatts (GW) to 100 GW.

Future Nuclear Development Goals

  • The target increase in nuclear capacity is a tenfold expansion.
  • Approximately half of this growth will occur through traditional interstate collaborations.
  • A significant part may involve international investments and private capital.

This development is marked as an “inspiring task” by Likhachev, who noted that India’s strategic approach includes adapting to recent geopolitical challenges. He pointed out that the ongoing sanctions imposed by certain countries opened new avenues for India to engage with Russia more closely.

Localizing Supply Chains

During discussions, Likhachev revealed that parts of the Indian localization process were established during the design phase of their projects. Additionally, elements were adjusted dynamically as Rosatom faced supply disruptions from countries that threatened sanctions.

Collaboration Amid Challenges

Rosatom’s focus on maintaining partnerships with friendly countries like India is crucial. According to Likhachev, these nations have effectively replaced those that failed to uphold their commitments. As such, Russia continues to adapt and thrive in an evolving global environment.

The collaboration between India and Russia in the realm of nuclear energy showcases a commitment to strong cooperation that enhances energy security and innovation in both countries.
