NFL Legend Recruits 4-Star Penn State Commit for Rival Team

Penn State’s recruiting efforts have hit a snag following the dismissal of head football coach James Franklin. This change has opened the door for rival teams to target top prospects, notably four-star recruit Matt Sieg from Fort Cherry, Pennsylvania.

NFL Legend’s Influence in Recruitment

Reports have confirmed that Jon Gruden, a Super Bowl-winning coach, reached out to Sieg on Friday. Gruden’s intent was clear: to encourage Sieg to consider the University of Pittsburgh, where Gruden once coached wide receivers in 1991.

Pitt’s Aggressive Pursuit of Matt Sieg

Pitt has been actively recruiting Sieg since Franklin’s departure. Their strategy included:

  • Parking a team equipment truck at Fort Cherry’s recent game.
  • Coach Pat Narduzzi visiting Sieg personally after a game.

Fort Cherry secured a decisive victory against Neshannock, winning 36-9, maintaining their undefeated streak for the season. Sieg, who plays quarterback, showcased his talent by rushing for 124 yards and scoring two touchdowns. Additionally, he contributed defensively with an interception.

Recruitment Landscape Following Coaching Changes

Ranked as the 16th safety nationally and the 5th overall player in Pennsylvania by the 247Sports Composite, Sieg has been committed to Penn State since November 2, 2024. However, his recent visits to both Indiana and Pitt indicate he is exploring his options.

Penn State’s current recruiting class has dwindled significantly, dropping from 25 commitments to just 17. The uncertainty has prompted several remaining prospects, including Sieg, to reconsider their commitments.

The ongoing recruitment saga highlights the impact of coaching changes on high school athlete decisions and the fierce competition among rival programs.
