NCT Alerts Drivers About Major Upcoming Change in Regulations
The National Car Testing Service (NCTS) has raised concerns regarding an alarming trend among drivers. In the past year, over 180,000 individuals failed their National Car Test (NCT) primarily due to poor tyre conditions. This issue represents a striking 10.5% of all motorists tested.
NCT Alerts Drivers About Major Upcoming Change in Regulations
In a joint effort, the NCTS, Road Safety Authority (RSA), and An Garda Síochána have launched Tyre Safety Day. This initiative aims to promote the importance of tyre maintenance, especially with the winter months approaching. Poor tyre conditions can significantly affect vehicle safety in wet and slippery road conditions.
Key Statistics on Tyre Issues
- 182,160 motorists failed their NCT due to tyre issues in the last year.
- 43,184 vehicles had tread depths below the legal limit of 1.6mm.
- Over 200,000 defective tyres have been identified this year alone.
- An Garda Síochána issued 1,755 fixed charge notices for tyre violations.
Expert Insights on Tyre Safety
Mark Synnott, Managing Director of NCTS, emphasized that worn-out tyres are a leading cause of NCT failures. Sam Waide, CEO of the RSA, highlighted the critical role tyres play in vehicle safety. He stated, “Tyres are the only part of your vehicle in direct contact with the road.”
Inspector Ross O’Doherty from An Garda Síochána echoed these sentiments, urging drivers to routinely inspect tyres for wear and damage. He mentioned that low-quality tyres not only endanger the driver but also pose risks to all road users.
Essential Tyre Safety Tips
To enhance safety on the roads, the following tyre maintenance tips are recommended:
- Conduct a visual check before each journey. Look for any signs of bulges, cracks, or uneven wear.
- Ensure that tyres are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure.
- Replace tyres when tread depth falls below 3mm, keeping in mind the legal minimum is 1.6mm (1mm for motorcycles).
Regular tyre checks can significantly impact vehicle safety and help prevent accidents. The NCTS reminds drivers to prioritize tyre maintenance as a consistent habit, not just a test-time obligation.
