NCT Urges Drivers to Address Critical Issue as Thousands Fail Test
The National Car Testing Service (NCT) has raised a significant alert regarding the condition of vehicle tyres. More than 180,000 drivers have failed their motoring tests largely due to tyre issues. This alarming statistic underscores the importance of regular tyre maintenance.
NCT Issues Urgent Warning to Drivers
In collaboration with the Road Safety Authority (RSA) and An Garda Síochána, the NCT is prompting drivers to pay close attention to their tyre conditions. Many motorists often discover tyre problems only during testing, which can lead to unsafe driving situations.
Impact of Winter on Tyres
As winter approaches, the NCT has initiated Tyre Safety Day to address tyre maintenance. Poor tyre conditions can exacerbate dangers on wet and slippery roads, significantly affecting vehicle control.
Statistics on Tyre Failures
- 182,160 drivers failed their NCT due to tyre issues last year.
- This accounts for 10.5% of all NCT tests conducted.
- 43,184 vehicles were found to have tread depths below the legal minimum of 1.6 mm.
- Over 200,000 defective tyres were identified by the NCT this year.
- 1,755 fixed charge notices for tyre offences were issued by An Garda Síochána in 2023.
Expert Advice on Tyre Safety
Mark Synnott, Managing Director of the NCTS, emphasized the vital role of tyres in vehicle safety. Similarly, Sam Waide, CEO of the RSA, noted that tyres are crucial for safe stopping and can prevent serious accidents.
Inspector Ross O’Doherty from the Garda National Roads Policing Bureau reinforced the need for regular tyre checks. He encourages drivers to watch for wear signs and replace tyres as needed to reduce accidents and enhance road safety.
Essential Tyre Maintenance Tips
- Conduct a visual inspection of your tyres before every trip.
- Look for bulges, cracks, cuts, or signs of uneven wear.
- Ensure tyres are inflated to the manufacturer’s specifications.
- Replace tyres when tread depth is below 3 mm; new tyres typically start with about 8 mm.
By prioritizing tyre maintenance, drivers can significantly improve their safety and that of other road users. Regular checks and timely replacements are key to successful vehicle operation, especially as winter conditions set in.
