Steelers Cut Former Browns Safety

Pittsburgh Steelers have officially released safety Juan Thornhill following their Week 10 defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Thornhill has been placed on waivers, giving him the opportunity for a fresh start in the league.

Thornhill’s Departure from Pittsburgh

Juan Thornhill made a brief post on Instagram that echoed his feelings about leaving the team. The post stated, “It’s been real Pittsburgh,” confirming the news of his release a day after the Steelers’ 25-10 loss.

Background on Thornhill’s Tenure

The Steelers had acquired Thornhill back in March on a one-year contract as a safety option behind DeShon Elliott and Minkah Fitzpatrick. However, Fitzpatrick was traded to the Miami Dolphins in late June, leaving Thornhill to take on a larger role during training camp.

Snap Count and Performance

  • Thornhill played significant snaps at the start of the season, recording a high of 84 snaps against the Cleveland Browns in Week 6.
  • In recent games, however, he did not see any defensive snaps against the Indianapolis Colts and the Chargers.

Future for Steelers’ Secondary

With Thornhill’s exit, the Steelers are looking to Jalen Ramsey as their primary free safety. Ramsey has recently logged a total of 102 snaps in this position over the last two games.

  • Kyle Dugger, acquired from the New England Patriots, is expected to be a crucial part of the defense following a solid performance against the Chargers.
  • Chuck Clark may fill in on defense and contribute on special teams as he returns from illness.
  • Jabrill Peppers is anticipated to take a significant defensive role as he recovers from a quadricep injury.

The Steelers are now in the process of adjusting their roster dynamics after this pivotal move. Thornhill’s next steps will depend on whether he clears waivers or becomes a free agent.
