Cowboys’ Solomon Thomas Embraces Unity, Charity Following Marshawn Kneeland Loss
In the wake of teammate Marshawn Kneeland’s tragic passing, Solomon Thomas and his fellow Cowboys players are finding solace through community service. They came together, demonstrating unity and charity while honoring their late teammate.
Team Grieves Together
On Monday, several players, including Osa Odighizuwa and Donovan Ezeiruaku, joined Solomon Thomas and The Defensive Line foundation at Metrocrest Services in Frisco, Texas. This non-profit organization assists individuals, families, and seniors facing crisis situations. The group packed food packages, aiding the homeless and those in need.
Thomas expressed that being apart during the bye week was challenging. The emotional reunion with teammates was essential as they processed their grief together. “I even told them, ‘Hey, I understand if you don’t want to come,’ and all of them wanted to come,” Thomas noted.
Support and Healing
The Cowboys held an in-person team meeting earlier that day, marking the first gathering since Kneeland’s passing. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer led the session, accompanied by team psychologist Heather Twedell and security director Cable Johnson. Thomas found the meeting impactful and emotional, highlighting Schottenheimer’s efforts to address the players’ needs.
“Extremely draining and hard day,” Thomas reflected on the experience. “We needed a day just to be human and to cry.” The meeting allowed players to share their emotions and support one another in this difficult time.
Messages of Love and Hope
In a virtual meeting the previous week, leaders like Dak Prescott and Thomas conveyed messages of love and support to the team. “I was just letting guys know that I loved them and that there’s hope,” Thomas shared. He emphasized the importance of unity in overcoming their collective grief.
Thomas has personal experience with loss, having lost his sister Ella to suicide in January 2018. He established The Defensive Line foundation in her honor, aiming to address youth suicide among young people of color. His parents are actively involved, with his mother volunteering on the food packing initiative.
Honoring Marshawn Kneeland
The loss of Kneeland resonates deeply with Thomas, as the emotional toll of his sister’s death is still fresh. He feels a strong sense of duty to support his teammates during this trying time. “I have a responsibility to be here for my teammates,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of mental health.
As the Cowboys aim to return to the field for their upcoming game against the Raiders, Thomas reflects on the challenges ahead. Despite the pain, they seek to honor Kneeland by playing with passion and unity, reminiscent of how he approached the game.
