Metro Bilbao is celebrating its 30th anniversary while setting ambitious goals for the future. The regional government plans to invest between €700 million and €800 million to enhance the metro system. This investment will focus on renewing the fleet and introducing new lines, signaling a commitment to modernize public transport in the area.
Future Metro Unveiled: New Investments and Innovations
The upcoming changes in Metro Bilbao include brand-new trains and an advanced communications system. The bidding process for these new train contracts is expected to be finalized by the end of the year. These trains will represent a “second generation” of rolling stock, offering significant improvements to the service.
Key Features of the New Trains
- Introduction of 37 new units with real-time sensor technology.
- Expected increase in passenger capacity by 11% to 15%.

Eneko Arruebarrena, the director of Metro Bilbao, highlighted the importance of these advancements. “These units will measure and communicate practically everything, revolutionizing metro maintenance and operations,” he stated. In addition, the new fleet is projected to reduce energy consumption by 35%, contributing to a more sustainable public transport system.
Development of Future Lines
Metro Bilbao is also advancing plans for lines 4 and 5. These lines are envisioned as the “trains of the future,” according to government representative Etxanobe. They will serve critical destinations such as the Hospital of Galdakao and several neighborhoods in Bilbao, including Irala, Rekalde, Basurto, and Zorrotza.
