OPPD Boosts Reliability with New App Amid Recent Power Outage Concerns
Recently, Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) faced significant challenges when nearly 1,600 customers experienced power outages. Compounding the issue, many could not access vital outage information due to failures in the utility’s app and website. The current mobile app features a placeholder message that directs users to an alternate website for information.
OOppd Enhances Reliability with Technology Improvements
In response to these outages, OPPD has acknowledged the difficulties faced by customers trying to report outages. Jodi Baker, OPPD’s media specialist, emphasized the importance of reliable communication during such incidents, stating that it could be “a matter of life and death.” She noted that the company has largely resolved the technology problems that affected their services during this outage.
Winter Preparedness Initiatives
Looking ahead to the winter season, OPPD is making several strategic improvements. Christopher Angland, director of electric grid operations, announced that two new generation plants have started operations, adding over 600 megawatts of capacity. This increase in capacity is expected to meet the higher power demands during the winter months.
Additionally, OPPD is implementing an Advanced Metering Infrastructure system. This system will enable the utility to detect outages proactively, improving response times significantly. Angland expressed optimism about these enhancements, stating they are crucial for ensuring reliability during adverse weather conditions.
Upcoming App Developments
Jodi Baker also revealed plans for a new version of the mobile app, which is anticipated to be launched by January. Meanwhile, she advised customers to rely on the website, which features an upgraded outage map for the most accurate information. Baker concluded by reaffirming OPPD’s commitment to restoring power as swiftly and efficiently as possible.
As OPPD enhances its infrastructure and technology, both the utility and its customers can look forward to increased reliability in power service during the demanding winter months.
