Shelter Boosts Capacity as Temperatures Drop, Sole County Homeless Facility

The Salvation Army’s homeless facility in Aiken County is responding to rising shelter demand as temperatures drop. As the only shelter in the county, it operates at or near full capacity during cold weather. To ensure everyone can find protection from the cold, staff at the facility make necessary adjustments.

Shelter’s Expanded Capacity during Cold Weather

When temperatures decline, the Salvation Army prepares to accommodate additional guests. Captain Michael Good emphasized the shelter’s mission to improve homelessness by focusing on lasting solutions. In October alone, they assisted 62 individuals in transitioning to stable housing and employment.

Overflow Challenges Faced by the Shelter

The shelter typically accommodates up to 44 individuals. However, during severe cold snaps, they can rearrange the space to house up to 70 people. This involves placing cots in hallways and dining areas, reshuffling furniture, and maximizing every available area.

  • Standard capacity: 44 individuals
  • Expanded capacity during cold snaps: 70 individuals
  • Number of individuals assisted in October: 62

Despite their efforts, space remains limited. Captain Good noted the challenge of fitting additional cots, often leaving little room for more guests. When they reach capacity, the staff must confront the reality of their limitations and find creative solutions.

Urgent Need for Donations

The shelter relies on donations to meet the immediate needs of those seeking help. Items brought in during the day are frequently distributed to overflow guests by nightfall. Captain Good highlighted the urgency associated with these donations, noting that recent contributions are quickly made available for those in need.

To maintain operations and support their mission, the Salvation Army of Aiken encourages monetary donations through their website. In-person contributions can also be made while supporting their Red Kettle Campaign. Volunteers play a crucial role, either offering their time or receiving payment for their participation in fundraising efforts.
