JFRD Shares Safety Tips for Upcoming Weekend Weather Shift

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department (JFRD) has issued critical safety tips ahead of a significant weather transition expected this weekend. Saturday will see temperatures in the 80s, but a dramatic drop is anticipated by Sunday night, with wind chills possibly plunging to the 30s by Monday evening.

Strong northwesterly winds and a dry air mass are predicted, which will enhance fire danger risk on Monday and Tuesday. Furthermore, light freezing conditions are forecast for inland areas on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, with a high chance of widespread frost on Wednesday.

JFRD’s Safety Recommendations

To help residents prepare for the cold, JFRD has provided various safety tips. Here are the key recommendations:

Caution with Space Heaters

  • Keep space heaters at least three feet away from anything that can catch fire.
  • Plug heaters directly into electrical outlets; avoid using extension cords or power strips.
  • Turn off heaters when leaving a room or going to sleep.
  • Never leave space heaters unattended.

Fireplace Safety

  • Inspect and clean chimneys annually.
  • Avoid overloading fireplaces with wood.
  • Use screens or glass doors to block sparks.
  • Never leave fires unattended and ensure they are completely extinguished before bedtime.

Critical Safety Reminders

  • Do not use ovens or non-heating appliances to warm your home.
  • Ensure working smoke alarms are installed on each floor and outside every bedroom.
  • Install carbon monoxide detectors throughout the house.
  • Never operate outdoor appliances like grills or generators indoors.
  • Create and practice a fire escape plan with all family members.

JFRD’s Preparedness Measures

In addition to advising the community, JFRD is implementing measures to protect its equipment from the cold weather. Actions include:

  • Water-containing apparatus will be protected to prevent freezing.
  • Draining water tanks from spare equipment stored outdoors.
  • Prioritizing the indoor storage of tankers whenever possible.

Fire Chief Percy Golden II emphasized the importance of the community’s vigilance during this weather shift. “The combination of elevated fire danger and freezing temperatures requires residents to be extra vigilant about home heating safety,” he stated.

As temperatures fluctuate, following these safety tips will help ensure the well-being of the Jacksonville community during this weather transition.
