Political Leaders in Northern Ireland Commemorate Armistice Day

Armistice Day was observed with solemnity and respect throughout Northern Ireland. Political leaders came together to honor the anniversary of the end of World War I at Stormont, the seat of the Northern Irish Parliament.

Commemorative Events at Stormont

The remembrance event took place in the senate chamber, where leaders gathered to pay their respects. A bugler performed the Last Post, a traditional tribute to those who lost their lives in the conflict. Following the music, Assembly Speaker Edwin Poots led a procession through the Great Hall of Parliament Buildings.

Wreath Laying Ceremony

At the memorial located near the entrance, Poots laid a wreath to symbolize the end of the war. Other officials participated in this poignant moment, including:

  • Jayne Brady – Head of the Northern Ireland Civil Service
  • Lesley Hogg – Assembly Chief Executive
  • Gavin Robinson – DUP Leader
  • Mike Nesbitt – UUP Leader
  • Naomi Long – Alliance Party Leader
  • Matthew O’Toole – SDLP Leader of the Opposition
  • Timothy Gaston – TUV MLA

DUP Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly was present alongside her party leader, noting her commitment to the day’s significance. She also mentioned her absence from a separate event in Dublin due to the Armistice Day commemorations.

Commemorations in Belfast

In addition to the Stormont events, Belfast also marked the occasion at the Cenotaph located on the grounds of City Hall. These tributes reflect a collective remembrance of the sacrifices made during the first World War and reaffirm Northern Ireland’s commitment to honoring its fallen heroes.
