Space Force Awareness Low; Association Unveils New Education Initiative

Recent surveys indicate that less than 10% of Americans are aware of the U.S. Space Force. In response, the Space Force Association, based in Colorado Springs, is launching a nationwide initiative to improve public understanding of this military branch. The association aims to establish chapters in every state to educate school children, lawmakers, and the general populace about the Space Force’s mission and significance.

Efforts to Increase Space Force Awareness

Retired Colonel Bill Woolf, the CEO of the Space Force Association, has stressed the importance of outreach to enhance awareness. During an event last year, Katharine Kelley, the deputy chief of space operations for the Space Force, reported that only 8% of the public recognized the organization’s existence, according to Air and Space Forces Magazine.

To capture the attention of younger audiences, Woolf engages students by connecting their daily activities to space technology. For instance, he discusses everyday use of navigation apps and weather forecasts, explaining that individuals interact with space technology more than 50 times daily, often without realizing it. This engagement highlights the significance of GPS and weather satellites in their lives.

Current Initiatives and Future Plans

The Space Force Association currently supports 26 chapters as part of its commitment to increasing awareness. In addition to this, a newly enacted federal law allows the Space Force to recognize Air Force veterans involved in space missions as “legacy guardians.” This recognition is anticipated to create a knowledgeable base for outreach initiatives.

A unique personal metric for Woolf’s success includes spotting individuals wearing Space Force T-shirts outside military installations. Recently, the Space Force Association partnered with the Space Foundation for a two-year program aimed at boosting space awareness and improving workforce development in the industry.

Workforce Development in the Space Sector

Rich Cooper, a spokesperson for the Space Foundation, shared that an analysis indicates 90% of companies in the space sector are looking to hire, with 75% encountering difficulties in recruiting talent. To address this workforce shortage, the Space Force Association has established the Space Professional Society for college students. This initiative aims to connect students with career development opportunities, including scholarships and workshops.

Additionally, the Space Foundation has developed educational curricula for teachers and organized talks featuring astronauts to encourage interest in space careers. Recently, retired Navy Captain Dominic Anthony “Tony” Antonelli, a former NASA astronaut, visited schools to inspire students by showcasing the beauty of Earth and promoting a deeper appreciation for our planet and space exploration.

Growing Interest in Space Exploration

With rising private sector investments in space, many students express a desire to travel via rocket. Woolf highlighted the necessity for continuous engagement and financial support for the Space Force. He asserted that the success of the entire space economy hinges on the Space Force’s ability to ensure freedom of action in, from, and to space.
