99-Year-Old U.S. Marine Veteran Honors WWII Comrades
As the United States Marine Corps celebrates its 250th birthday, stories of valor and sacrifice come to the forefront. One such story is that of Private First Class Michael Grieco Sr. He is a 99-year-old veteran of World War II, and his experiences embody the spirit of his generation.
Michael Grieco’s Journey
Grieco enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1943 at just 17 years old. Reflecting on his youth, he noted, “We were only teenagers — 17, 18, 19-year-old kids.” Throughout the brutal trials of the Pacific Theater, he served in key battles including Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa.
Saipan: A Scene of Chaos
During the Battle of Saipan, Grieco witnessed intense combat. “They had a banzai attack,” he recalled. “There must have been a hundred enemy soldiers lying all over the place.” This encounter illustrated the chaos and bravery faced by Marines in the field.
Tinian’s Reality
The journey continued to Tinian, where Grieco navigated challenging conditions. “I had water up to my chest — I can’t swim,” he laughed. Despite some labeling it an “easy campaign,” he emphasized its severity. “They said it only lasted 10 days. Ask those 300 Marines who were killed, plus the ones who were wounded.”
Okinawa: The Bloodiest Battle
Grieco’s service culminated in the Battle of Okinawa, described as the final and bloodiest confrontation of the Pacific War. “Okinawa was something else,” he said quietly, reflecting on the harrowing experiences of that time.
A Lifelong Commitment to Comrades
After being discharged in 1946, Grieco’s commitment to his fellow Marines endured. “Semper Fi means you’re friends forever,” he stated. This annual camaraderie is symbolized by the tradition of cutting a birthday cake shared by the oldest and youngest Marines.
Recognizing a Hometown Hero
At 99, Grieco actively honors his service through various initiatives. He travels with Forever Young Veterans, sharing his story and experiences. Recently, he was recognized by the Philadelphia Phillies as a hometown hero.
Honoring Heroes on Marine Corps Birthday
This significant anniversary of the Marine Corps is a fitting time to honor Private First Class Michael Grieco Sr. and all veterans who embody the motto of Semper Fidelis. Their sacrifices and bravery continue to inspire future generations.
