Detroit Free Press Seeks Nominations for High School Athlete of the Week
The Detroit Free Press has officially opened voting for the Athlete of the Week, spotlighting five exceptional high school athletes. These nominees excelled in their sports during the week of November 2-8 and represent a mix of volleyball and swimming.
Nominees for High School Athlete of the Week

- Brenna Mirovsky – Oxford, Volleyball
- Kayla Nwabueze – Bloomfield Hills, Volleyball

Gabby DiVita of Grosse Pointe South
Gabby DiVita has been a driving force behind her team’s success. With her leadership, the Blue Devils reached the regional semifinals after wins against Grosse Pointe North and Detroit Renaissance. As a candidate for Miss Volleyball, DiVita recorded 63 kills with an impressive average of nine kills per set and a hitting percentage of .426. She also contributed defensively with 27 digs and four blocks.
Brenna Mirovsky from Oxford
Junior outside hitter Brenna Mirovsky played a significant role in Oxford’s journey toward their first district title since 2002. Her performance was critical in matches against Lake Orion and Clarkston, where the Wildcats triumphed in five sets. Mirovsky accumulated 22 kills, 35 digs, three blocks, and seven serving assists over these matches.
Kayla Nwabueze of Bloomfield Hills
Also a Miss Volleyball candidate, Kayla Nwabueze led her team to the regional semifinals after a landmark victory over Bloomfield Hills Marian. She recorded a total of 35 kills, 13 digs, and three aces in a critical match, followed by an impressive performance of 30 kills, 21 digs, and two blocks in subsequent games.
Ashlyn Taylor from Gibraltar Carlson
Senior swimmer Ashlyn Taylor played an essential role in Carlson’s success at the Downriver League Championship. She excelled in two individual events, achieving personal bests. Taylor clocked 1:02.21 in the 100-yard backstroke and 2:18.79 in the 200-yard individual medley, helping her team secure the league title.
Eleanor Williams of Romeo
In a remarkable showing, Eleanor Williams significantly influenced Romeo’s volleyball team. Entering the 2025 tournament unranked, she helped achieve an upset victory against the No. 7 seed, Utica Eisenhower, in a thrilling 3-2 match. Williams, a junior right-side hitter, delivered a two-game total of 35 kills, 21 digs, four blocks, and five aces.

Fans and supporters can cast their votes until noon on Friday, November 14. To participate in the voting process for the Athlete of the Week, visit Emegypt every Tuesday morning. Nominations for future weeks are accepted until 10 a.m. on Mondays for performances from the previous week. Interested individuals can nominate athletes on Emegypt but should note that nominations are distinct from voting.
