AMC Theatres Reports $298.2 Million Loss Despite Blockbuster Summer Hits
AMC Theatres, the world’s largest cinema chain, reported a staggering loss of $298.2 million for the recent quarter. This financial downturn occurred despite significant summer releases, including “Jurassic World Rebirth,” “Weapons,” and “Superman.” However, their box office earnings did not match last year’s runaway successes like “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Despicable Me 4.”
Quarterly Financial Overview
For the three-month period ending in September, AMC’s revenue reached $1.3 billion. This figure represents a 3.6% decline compared to the same quarter last year. The company’s losses were primarily attributed to non-cash charges tied to a significant debt refinancing that took place in July 2025.
Adjusted Net Losses
- Net Loss: $298.2 million
- Previous Year’s Loss: $20.7 million
- Adjusted Net Loss: $110 million
- Last Year’s Adjusted Loss: $15.9 million
- Loss Per Share: $0.21, compared to $0.04 previously
Admissions accounted for $715.1 million in this quarter, dropping from $744.2 million in the same period last year. Food and beverage sales also fell to $451.8 million, down from $490.4 million the previous year. This decline indicates a reduced interest in cinema attendance, which is concerning for a major theater chain like AMC.
Market Response and Expectations
Despite the losses, AMC managed to surpass Wall Street’s projections for third-quarter revenue, which was anticipated to be around $1.23 billion. Adam Aron, AMC’s CEO, noted in his statement that the calendar year 2025 has unfolded as they had expected. The year began weakly, followed by a strong second quarter and now a softer third quarter.
Future Outlook
AMC remains optimistic about the end of the year, with several highly anticipated films set to release in the coming months. Notable sequels to look forward to include:
- Zootopia
- Wicked
- Avatar
However, the box office revenues for October have faced challenges, reaching their lowest levels since 1997. Disappointing releases such as “Tron: Ares” and “The Smashing Machine” contributed to this decline. Yet, AMC experienced a success with a limited release of “Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl,” drawing in crowds of fans.
As the year nears its conclusion, AMC, along with other cinemas, must work diligently to recover lost ground and to encourage audiences to return to theaters.
