First Presidency Unveils Designs, Locations for New Idaho and Nigeria Temples
The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has unveiled plans for new temples in Idaho and Nigeria. This announcement offers design details and locations for the Coeur d’Alene Idaho Temple and the Calabar Nigeria Temple.
Coeur d’Alene Idaho Temple Details
The Coeur d’Alene Idaho Temple will be the church’s tenth temple in Idaho. It is set to be constructed on a 10.91-acre site at the intersection of Hanley Avenue and Coeur Terre Boulevard in Coeur d’Alene.
Key features of the temple include:
- Size: Approximately 29,630 square feet.
- Design: A single-story structure.
- Additional facilities: A meetinghouse and an ancillary building.
President Russell M. Nelson first announced the temple in October 2024. The temple will serve over 480,000 Latter-day Saints spread across nearly 1,300 congregations in the region.
Significance of the Coeur d’Alene Temple
President Nelson emphasized the spiritual importance of temples, stating, “Every sincere seeker of Jesus Christ will find him in the temple.”
Calabar Nigeria Temple Plans
The Calabar Nigeria Temple will be built on a 7-acre site along Atekong Drive in Calabar, Cross River State. This temple will be the church’s fifth operating temple in Nigeria.
Details regarding the Calabar Temple include:
- Size: Approximately 26,000 square feet.
- Design: A single-story structure.
- Supporting facilities: Patron housing and a meetinghouse.
The temple aims to support more than 250,000 members across 840 congregations in Nigeria. President Nelson announced the temple in October 2023, emphasizing its role in helping members think more about the celestial. He stated, “The Lord is directing us to build these temples to help us think celestial.”
Future of Temple Construction
President Dallin H. Oaks discussed the future path of temple construction. At the October 2025 general conference, he indicated that while many temples are in the early stages of planning, there would not be announcements for new temples at that time. The focus will remain on providing temple ordinances to members globally.
These developments in Idaho and Nigeria signify a commitment to expanding the church’s facilities and enhancing the spiritual lives of its members.
