President Higgins and Sabina Depart Dublin as Misneach Returns to Galway

President Michael D. Higgins and his wife, Sabina, are set to depart from Áras an Uachtaráin today. Their exit marks the conclusion of a significant chapter, as the couple prepares for a return to their home in Rahoon, County Galway. Their beloved Bernese Mountain dog, Misneach, has already made the journey ahead of them.

Departure Details

The official departure time for Mr. and Mrs. Higgins is at 6 PM today. They plan to spend the night in Dublin, attending the inauguration of Catherine Connolly. Following this event, they will return to Galway on Wednesday.

Preparation for the Move

  • The process of moving back home began months ago, even before the election date was announced.
  • Over 14 years, many belongings accumulated at the Áras, prompting a substantial clearing out.

During a recent interview, President Higgins mentioned the “great move” and indicated that many of his personal books from the Áras library would either be donated to Galway University or transported to their Galway residence. He expressed excitement about returning home but also plans to stay engaged in ongoing projects both in Ireland and internationally.

Health Concerns

In referencing his health, President Higgins revealed that he had experienced a stroke in February 2024. This incident impacted his balance, necessitating the use of walking sticks. This health issue has contributed to a noticeable decline in his physical condition as he approaches his 85th birthday.

Last month, he even required two nights in the hospital to address a localized infection. Additionally, he has been coping with arthritis, which limits his time at the kitchen table where he once enjoyed writing poetry.

Future Plans

Despite these challenges, the President remains optimistic. He looks forward to spending quality time with his grandchildren, Finn and Fiadh, and revisiting books he started but never finished. He affirmed, “I won’t be stuck for something to do,” indicating his determination to remain active.
