Missoula’s Cold Springs School Evicts Childcare Providers Over Building Concerns

In a recent development, childcare providers at Missoula’s Cold Springs School have been instructed to vacate the premises due to serious structural concerns. The notice was issued on November 7, leaving over 70 children without care.

Concerns Over Building Safety

The Cold Springs School, owned by Missoula County Public Schools (MCPS), housed several childcare services, including Atti-Tudees and Bumble Bee Academy. Katy Slagell, owner of Atti-Tudees, expressed her dismay at the sudden order, stating that providers were taken by surprise.

  • Over 70 children suddenly left without care
  • Immediate evacuation notice issued on November 7
  • Childcare providers were tenants in old school classrooms

Slagell mentioned that her business incurred significant costs related to the relocation process and preparations made for the facility. She stated, “I’m sitting at nineteen grand deep, and there’s no clarity on moving forward.”

Financial Investments Made

Missoula Child Care Advantage (MCCA), which oversees the facility, invested over $500,000 in renovations prior to the occupancy by childcare providers. Susan Hay Patrick, CEO of United Way for Missoula County, revealed that the state of the building was unknown during the renovations.

“We poured a lot of resources into these spaces,” she noted, highlighting the dedication of the providers who transformed the classrooms to create enriching environments for children. The sudden report of structural insecurities came as a shock to all stakeholders involved.

Next Steps for Affected Providers

MCPS is currently working with MCCA to identify temporary locations for affected families. Superintendent Micah Hill acknowledged the urgency of the situation and stated that finding alternative care solutions is a priority.

As the investigation into the building’s structural integrity continues, MCCA remains uncertain when childcare providers will be able to return, if at all. Fortunately, other tenants in the Cold Springs School remain unaffected.
