Tampa Bay Shatters 133-Year Record with Low Temperature Tuesday Morning

Tampa Bay set a historic low temperature record on Tuesday morning, breaking a 133-year-old mark. The temperature dropped to 39 degrees Fahrenheit, surpassing the previous record of 40 degrees set in 1892.

Freeze Warning Issued

The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for northern counties. Residents are urged to take precautions as a significant cold snap settles in. Local veterinarians remind pet owners that if it is cold for them, it is equally cold for their pets.

Pet Care Guidelines

  • Bring indoor and outdoor pets inside.
  • Shorten outdoor walks and monitor time spent outside.
  • Provide sheltered spaces for outdoor or feral cats.

As Dr. Jenese Williams from Kingdom Pet Hospital notes, pets can lose body heat quickly, making it essential to minimize their time outdoors.

Protecting Sensitive Plants

Many plants common in Central Florida, including peppers and tomatoes, cannot withstand frost or freezing temperatures. Gardening experts recommend covering vulnerable plants with light sheets or tarps to retain warmth.

David Whitwam from Good Day Garden advises that a simple cloth covering can significantly improve plant survival overnight.

Impact on Visitors

Visitors to Florida experienced unexpected weather shifts. The cold snap surprised many northern families enjoying their fall vacations. Tourists reported needing to purchase warmer clothing as they adjusted to the sudden temperature change.

Space Heater Safety

As residents start using space heaters, fire officials are emphasizing safety. Place heaters on stable surfaces at least three feet away from flammable materials. Users should plug heaters directly into a wall outlet and turn them off before leaving a room or going to bed.

Cold Weather Shelters Open

In response to the cold front, shelters opened across Hillsborough County. Hyde Park United Methodist Church, one of the largest cold-weather shelters in the area, provided space for 80 individuals. Guests arrived as early as 3 p.m. for the 6 p.m. opening.

Volunteers emphasized creating a secure environment for those in need. Hillsborough County is currently facing an increasing demand for emergency shelter, with an estimated 800 individuals without homes.

Cold Weather Shelter Locations

  • Hyde Park United Methodist Church: 500 W Platt St., Tampa
  • Church of God of Prophecy Hyde Park: 107 S Oregon Ave., Tampa
  • Amazing Love Ministries: 3304 E Columbus Dr., Tampa
  • Tampa Bay Mission of Hope: 110 Parsons Blvd., Brandon

Additional shelters for families and individuals are offering warm spaces in various locations, including Pinellas and Polk Counties.

Attractions Temporarily Closed

The cold snap has impacted local attractions, leading to the temporary closure of some water parks. Universal’s Volcano Bay and SeaWorld’s Aquatica closed on Monday, while Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon announced it would close for the season due to the low temperatures.

Despite the chill, Busch Gardens is set to launch Christmas Town this weekend, welcoming visitors with a festive atmosphere enhanced by the cool weather.

As Tampa Bay embraces these record-low temperatures, residents and visitors alike are reminded to stay warm and take necessary precautions.
