Valve unveils the long-awaited Steam Frame VR headset set to launch in 2026
Valve is set to re-enter the virtual reality market with its highly anticipated Steam Frame headset, launching in early 2026. This new device, previously known by its codename “Deckard,” follows the successful release of the Steam Deck and its OLED model.
Steam Frame Features
The Steam Frame is a wireless, streaming-first VR headset designed for an immersive gaming experience. Users can dive into both VR and flatscreen games upon wearing the headset. An innovative plug-and-play 6GHz wireless adapter connects to PCs or Steam Machines. This adapter features a dual-radio setup that minimizes interference, dedicating one radio to audio and visuals and the other to Wi-Fi.
Specifications
- Chipset: Snapdragon 8 Gen 3
- RAM: 16GB
- Storage: Up to 1TB built-in UFS and microSD card slot
- Battery: Rechargeable 21.6 Wh Li-ion
- Charging: 45W via USB-C 2.0 port

The headset’s design incorporates a battery positioned at the rear of the headstrap, which enhances comfort by eliminating unnecessary cables. Additionally, users may have the option to swap headstraps for alternatives, including those with larger battery capacities.
Display and Visual Optimization
The Steam Frame features dual 2160 x 2160 LCD panels with refresh rates up to 144Hz and a field of view of 110 degrees. A notable innovation is the Foveated Streaming capability, powered by two internal cameras that utilize low-latency eye-tracking. This technology optimizes image detail wherever the user is focused, potentially improving image quality and bandwidth by tenfold.
Audio and Tracking
For audio, Valve has integrated dual stereo speakers oriented to cancel out unwanted vibrations. The headset includes four high-resolution monochrome cameras for precise inside-out tracking. Additionally, infrared LEDs enhance tracking capabilities in low-light conditions.
Historical Context and Future Potential
This marks Valve’s renewed attempt in the VR arena after the release of the Valve Index in 2019, and their previous collaborations with HTC on the Vive. Despite the challenges of achieving mainstream success compared to competitors like the Meta Quest and PlayStation VR, Valve’s expertise in VR gaming shines with titles like Half-Life: Alyx.
The development of Steam Frame could position Valve as a key contender in the virtual reality landscape once again, especially with the growing popularity of SteamOS among other manufacturers. As the release date approaches, industry enthusiasts and gamers alike eagerly await further updates on this innovative headset.
