Starting in January, significant changes to social welfare payments in Ireland are confirmed. These changes will particularly benefit recipients of the Fuel Allowance and Working Family Payment. The government has announced an increase in the weekly Fuel Allowance payment from €33 to €38 effective from January 2026.
Key Changes to Social Welfare Payments
The increase in the Fuel Allowance is coupled with the news that the Working Family Payment will qualify for this allowance starting in March 2026. Eligible recipients will see the new rate applied retroactively from January 2026, including the €5 increase.
- Current Fuel Allowance: €33 per week
- New Fuel Allowance from January 2026: €38 per week
- Duration: 28 weeks or €924 in total through lump sums
- Second lump sum payment is scheduled for January 2026
