Zielinski Makes History as First Division II Golfer to Compete in PGA Tour Event

Drew Zielinski, a senior at Lee University, is making headlines as the first active NCAA Division II golfer to compete in a PGA Tour event. This historic moment takes place at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, following his exceptional performance at the Fripp Island to Bermuda Invite.

Historic Achievement in Golf

Zielinski earned an exemption to the PGA Tour event after securing medalist honors on October 21, 2023. He played at South Carolina’s Ocean Point Golf Course, where he led Lee University to a commanding team victory by 18 shots. The competition intensified as Zielinski faced teammate Bennett McNabb for the coveted Bermuda spot.

A Remarkable Competition

  • Zielinski opened with a course record of 65.
  • He finished with a final round of 66, clinching the win by two strokes.
  • McNabb will join him in Bermuda as his caddie.

“It will be awesome to have Bennett on the bag,” Zielinski stated. He emphasized trust in McNabb and the importance of preparation for the competition ahead.

Preparation and Expectations

Third-year Lee head coach Evan Spence acknowledged Zielinski’s talent. He noted that Zielinski finished runner-up at the Division II national championship last year, showcasing his ability in high-pressure situations. Zielinski, currently ranked the top Division II golfer, expressed gratitude for this opportunity.

Field and Competitors

At the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, Zielinski will compete against renowned golfers, including:

  • Danny Willett – Former Masters champion
  • Francesco Molinari – Open Championship winner
  • Brandt Snedeker
  • Sahith Theegala
  • Matt Kuchar
  • Kevin Streelman

“It’s rare to have my name listed with theirs,” Zielinski reflected, emphasizing his commitment to competing at a high level. He aims not only to make the cut but to have a significant presence on the leaderboard.

Experience on the PGA Tour

During his practice rounds, Zielinski connected with PGA Tour veterans like Sam Stevens and Theegala. “The atmosphere is so surreal,” he remarked, appreciating the supportive environment on the tour.

Legacy for Division II Golfers

Coach Spence is proud of Zielinski, recognizing the significance of his participation. “Drew’s going to be representing all Division II golfers,” he stated. As Zielinski embarks on this journey, he symbolizes hope for many aspiring golfers in Division II.

The opportunity to compete at the PGA Tour level marks a pivotal moment not only in Zielinski’s career but also in the landscape of college golf.
