Storm Claudia and Its Impact on the UK
The amber weather warning will be in effect from noon until the end of the day, covering:
- Wales

- South East England
- The East of England
Many areas could receive up to 150mm (6 inches) of rainfall, with forecasts suggesting flooding may be severe. Weather Warnings and Forecast
Met Office Chief Meteorologist Matthew Lehnert noted that Storm Claudia will result in intense rainfall, particularly in central and southern England and Wales, from Friday into Saturday. He cautioned that some regions might experience a month’s worth of rain in just 24 hours.
In addition, Met Eireann, Ireland’s meteorological service, has issued weather warnings for the south-eastern parts of Ireland, predicting significant rainfall as the weekend approaches.
Travel and Safety Concerns
Authorities warn of potential travel disruptions and power outages across the affected regions. The strong easterly winds accompanying the storm may produce gusts reaching 70mph in parts of northwest Wales and northwest England.
Conditions by the Weekend
As the weekend unfolds, northern regions of the UK are expected to experience a drop in temperatures, coupled with overnight frosts. While some lingering showers may continue, a drier and brighter weather period is anticipated in these areas.
The southern regions will begin the weekend with predominantly cloudy and wet conditions, though the rain is expected to ease by the end of the weekend, making way for the colder, drier weather that will spread across the country.
Storm Claudia’s Broader Impact
Storm Claudia has prompted weather warnings throughout Spain and Portugal. Tragically, an elderly couple in Portugal lost their lives in their flooded home in Fernao Ferro, just south of Lisbon. Additionally, nearly 14,000 people in Portugal experienced power outages due to the storm’s effects.
In summary, as Storm Claudia approaches the UK, weather warnings highlight the risk of severe flooding, travel disruptions, and hazardous conditions. Residents are advised to stay alert and prepare for changing weather patterns throughout the weekend.
