AIMIM Outshines Congress in Bihar Elections with Significant Gains in Seemanchal

The All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has shown remarkable strength in the Seemanchal region of Bihar during the 2025 Assembly elections. Preliminary results indicate the party is leading in six crucial constituencies, echoing its strong performance from the previous elections in 2020.

AIMIM’s Stronghold in Seemanchal: Key Constituencies

The latest results from the Election Commission of India (ECI) reveal AIMIM candidates are ahead in the following seats:

  • Jokihat: Mohammad Murshid Alam – 61,764 votes (20,128 margin)
  • Bahadurganj: Md Tauseef Alam – 41,474 votes (2,915 margin)
  • Thakurganj: Ghulam Hasnain – 65,731 votes (9,965 margin)
  • Kochadhaman: Md Sarwar Alam – 76,124 votes (22,093 margin)
  • Amour: Akhtarul Iman – 83,887 votes (34,454 margin)
  • Baisi: Ghulam Sarwar – 42,494 votes (6,680 margin)

AIMIM’s Strategy to Expand Its Base

After its exclusion from the INDIA alliance, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi outlined a strategy to contest 100 seats in Bihar. The party put forward 25 candidates, including two who are non-Muslim, aiming to widen its voter appeal beyond its traditional followers in Seemanchal.

AIMIM previously surprised analysts by winning five seats in the region during the 2020 elections. However, due to defections, only Akhtarul Iman from Amour remained with the party. His current lead reaffirms AIMIM’s significant influence within its core constituency.

Understanding Seemanchal’s Electoral Significance

The Seemanchal region includes Araria, Katihar, Kishanganj, and Purnea. This area encompasses 24 Assembly constituencies and has a dense Muslim population. Historically, it has served as a strategic base for AIMIM’s political maneuvers in Bihar.

The Statewide Context: NDA’s Distribution of Power

While AIMIM performs well in Seemanchal, broader trends show the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leading statewide. Current counts suggest that NDA may secure over 200 seats, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead in 91 seats and Janata Dal (United) in 79. Other NDA constituents also showcase the following results:

  • LJP (RV): 22 seats
  • Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM): 4 seats
  • HAMS: 4 seats

Conversely, the Mahagathbandhan coalition appears to be on track for its poorest performance ever, currently leading in only 36 seats.

Future Implications for AIMIM

AIMIM’s performance in Seemanchal demonstrates its resilience and capability to adapt despite recent organizational challenges. The strategy to diversify its candidate pool, along with focused outreach to regional constituents, seems effective. As the counting progresses, AIMIM’s achievements in these six critical constituencies will be pivotal in interpreting the overall results of the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections.
