Offaly Teams Commended for Exceptional Response to Severe Rainfall Crisis

Offaly County Council and Uisce Éireann received commendations for their exemplary response to flooding resulting from severe rainfall this week. During a Tullamore Municipal District meeting on Thursday, local officials praised the coordinated efforts to address flooding at a well-known problem area on Callary Street.

Commendable Response to Flooding Issues

Cllr Declan Harvey led the acknowledgments, specifically highlighting the swift actions taken by both teams. “I’ve been critical of Uisce Éireann, but their response was commendable on Wednesday,” he stated. Notably, during the flooding, there were no sewage discharges from manholes, unlike past incidents.

Local Efforts and Leadership

Cllr Harvey also expressed appreciation for Area Engineer Joe Dooley and the council’s outdoor team, who managed to tackle flooding in other areas, including Ballycumber and Tullamore. Cllr Aoife Masterson remarked on the challenging 24 to 48 hours but emphasized the importance of recognizing that the situation could have escalated significantly.

In her comments, Masterson noted the historically contentious relationship with Uisce Éireann in Tullamore, expressing hope for resolution of ongoing issues. He recounted his own experience, receiving immediate assistance following a call he made at 2:30 AM related to weather problems.
