Storm Claudia Causes Flooding and Power Outages with Weather Set to Stabilize Today
Storm Claudia has resulted in significant flooding and power outages across multiple counties. The national forecaster’s Orange alert was active for Dublin, Wexford, and Wicklow, impacting approximately 1.7 million residents. This alert began at noon yesterday and expired at 8 a.m. today. Additionally, a Status Yellow rain warning affecting 13 counties expired this morning at 9 a.m.
Areas Affected by Storm Claudia
Thousands of homes, farms, and businesses experienced power outages last night. The most affected areas included:
- Birr, County Offaly
- Kilcullen and Newbridge, County Kildare
- Several neighborhoods in Dublin
- Counties along the eastern seaboard
Dublin City Council reported that its flood response teams will maintain an on-site presence throughout the weekend. Concerns have been raised regarding the River Dodder due to potential heavy rainfall in the Dublin Mountains. Flood defence gates are in place from Beatty’s Avenue to Bath Avenue until Saturday afternoon.
Road Conditions and Safety Warnings
Road conditions remain hazardous in various areas. Wexford County Council noted that surface water on the R772 near Junction 22 in Gorey has nowhere to drain, while the R741 north of Castlebridge became impassable yesterday evening. Other road closures include fallen trees along:
- R730, Coolishal in Gorey
- Ballykelly in New Ross
- Bridgetown in Rosslare
Limited flooding has also been reported in Wicklow. Residents are being alerted to the risk of fallen trees obstructing travel routes.
Flood Responses and Warnings
In Cork, where a Status Yellow alert is in effect, the council has confirmed a Level 1 flood response is underway. They warned of potential excess surface water and additional flooding due to overnight rains. Pumping arrangements are being implemented in the region.
An Garda Síochána has urged motorists to avoid driving through flooded roads and advised pedestrians to be cautious of hidden hazards in seemingly shallow water.
Transportation Impact
Several ferry services between Dublin and Holyhead were cancelled yesterday due to dangerous conditions, with Stena Line notifying passengers that services would resume when it is safe. However, Dublin Airport reported that flight operations continued without disruption.
Looking Ahead: Weather Forecast
According to Met Éireann meteorologist Mark Bowe, weather conditions are set to stabilize. By Saturday morning, he expects the rain will likely dissipate. While today remains cloudy with lighter rain, next week is predicted to bring cooler temperatures and drier weather overall, despite possible rainfall on the east coast.
Drivers are advised to remain cautious even after the rain subsides due to debris and slippery road conditions. As more rainfall is expected, residents should stay updated on local advisories and take necessary precautions.
